Retail Security Systems Sydney

Cut Shrink, Protect Staff, and Keep Trading with Retail-Specific Security

At Sydneywide Security, we design and install retail security systems for Sydney shops, boutiques, chains, and shopping centre tenancies, from a single strip-retail store in Bondi Junction to multi-site franchise networks across Greater Sydney.

We design systems that address realities like CCTV positioned for evidence and deterrence, EAS gates and tags at store exits, alarm systems that protect stock overnight, and 24/7 monitoring that reacts within seconds when your after-hours alarm triggers.

Complete Retail Security Systems We Install

security camera

HD cameras positioned for evidence at entries, POS terminals (over the shoulder), high-value displays, fitting room entries, stockrooms, and back-of-house. Retail-specific video analytics (people counting, dwell time, line crossing) turn cameras into loss prevention tools, not just recorders. 30 to 90 days of cloud storage for insurer and police review.

ChatGPT Image Feb 26 2026 03 37 17 PM

Multi-zone alarm systems that split trading hours (staff-safe mode with duress only) from after-hours (full perimeter armed). Discreet duress buttons under every register let staff call for help silently during aggression or robbery. Glass-break sensors, roof access detection, and after-hours smoke alarm integration all connect back to our monitoring centre.

Access Control

Card, fob, PIN, or mobile access on stockroom doors, cash offices, delivery entries, and after-hours access points. Full audit trail of who accessed what and when. Instant credential deactivation for lost cards or staff departures. Reduces internal theft risk without slowing down staff during trading.

Back to Base Monitoring Sydney

Every alarm signal is verified within seconds by trained operators at our ASIAL Grade A1 Sydney monitoring centre. Duress alarms trigger a silent priority response. Licensed patrol officers are dispatched fast; NSW Police are called for confirmed intrusions. Full written incident reports are emailed the next morning.

Why Retail Security Is Different from Every Other Property Type

A retail store is one of the most complex physical environments a security system has to protect. Unlike an office (private during trading), a warehouse (empty most of the day), or a home (routine hours), a retail shop is publicly accessible during trading, has valuable stock on open display, employs junior staff at cash points, and closes with money on the premises.

That combination creates security challenges specific to retail that generic security systems don’t fully address.

Trading hours: shoplifting, refund fraud, customer aggression

Break-in security won’t help here. This period needs cameras positioned for evidence capture during customer interactions, EAS gates for physical deterrence at exits, discreet duress buttons for staff safety, and POS exception review to catch fraudulent refunds and voids.

The 30-minute window when tills are cashed off and closed is a high-risk period for both external robbery and internal theft. Camera coverage of every till at close-down, alarm keypad placement that doesn’t create staff bottlenecks, and safe drop procedures all need to be in the system design.

Once you close, the whole property becomes a target. Perimeter alarms, glass-break sensors, roof access detection, and 24/7 back-to-base monitoring take over as the primary defence layer. Generic security systems tend to be designed for one window and miss the other two. Retail-specific systems cover all three.

Where We Position Cameras in a Sydney Retail Store

Retail camera placement is different from any other property type. Cameras have three jobs at once: deter opportunistic theft, capture evidence for insurance and police, and give management visibility into daily operations.

Camera position matters more than camera count. During the free site walkthrough, our licensed technicians walk your store during trading and mark every camera position based on your floor plan, POS locations, and high-shrink stock zones.

Standard camera zones for a Sydney retail store:

  • Entry and exit doors (customer count, EAS gate coverage, evidence capture).
  • Every POS/register position (angled from behind the counter, capturing till, customer, and transaction in one frame).
  • High-value display zones (jewellery cabinets, spirits, electronics, cosmetics, premium apparel).
  • Fitting room ENTRIES only (never inside; this is illegal under NSW law).
  • Stockroom doors and delivery entries.
  • Back office and cash office.
  • Loading dock and rear laneway access.
  • Overview cameras for the whole shop floor (dome or PTZ for full coverage).

Multi-Site Retail Management for Sydney Chains & Franchises

If you operate more than one Sydney store, security across sites should not mean logging into five different systems. Every retail security system we install for multi-site retailers is designed for centralised management from day one, so you or your operations manager can see every store from one dashboard.

What multi-site retail security looks like when done right:

  • One cloud dashboard for CCTV, alarms, and access control across all sites.

  • Consistent hardware and configuration across every store (simplifies staff training and system support).

  • Centralised user management (add or remove a staff member across every site in one action).

  • Per-site incident reporting with cross-site pattern detection (spot the recurring theft crew hitting multiple stores).
  • Standardised alarm response playbooks per site.

  • Staged rollout that lets you start with 1 store and expand to 50 without re-buying the platform.

Staff Safety, Duress Buttons & WHS Duty of Care

Retail workers in NSW face significant workplace aggression, particularly during shoplifting interventions, cash-handling procedures, and difficult customer interactions. Under the Work Health and Safety Act 2011 (NSW), employers have a legal duty of care to protect staff from foreseeable workplace violence.

Duress buttons and panic alarm systems are one of the most affordable and effective ways to meet those obligations while giving your team confidence during difficult shifts.

Duress and panic alarm setups we install for Sydney retailers:

Fixed duress under every POS

The standard install. A discreet button under the counter that, when pressed, sends a silent priority alarm to our monitoring centre. Staff can continue serving the customer normally while help is on the way. No confrontation, no escalation.

Wireless duress pendants

Worn on a lanyard or belt for floor staff not tied to a register. Range up to 100m from the base station. Ideal for larger stores, jewellery, electronics, and homewares where staff move around the sales floor.

Duress with automatic video recording

When any duress is triggered, the nearest camera automatically switches to continuous priority recording and the footage is preserved for police evidence. This turns every duress event into court-ready evidence.

Mobile app duress for managers

The manager's smartphone doubles as a duress trigger. Useful for cash-handling, bank runs, opening and closing procedures, and after-hours stock counts.

Just had two fine gentlemen from Sydneywide Security over today for a 4 camera (2 PTZ + 2 Turret) 24/7 PoE NVR system I bought from a major retailer! No worries, no fuss at all, even when I changed my mind about placement for one of the PTZ! Courteous, knowledgeable and respectful, they did the hard yards, cleaned up after themselves, even cheerfully moved their service vans for the Mrs. when she had get to her doctor's appointment!

I spent about a month looking for certified installers in the Sydney area, most offered system + install (but mine was BYO), some didn't even get back to me (which is likely a good thing!). I even asked my friends and colleagues - none had any recent dealings with professional installers - well I KNOW who I will recommend to them now!

Professional, trustworthy and attentive, Sydneywide Security made this experience stress-free! Thanks guys!

We are a 179 apartment complex made up of 12 residential blocks (in 5 towers) ranging from 3 to 5 stories; Sydneywide Security were chosen to look after the upgrade of our CCTV and did an excellent job.

We then tasked them with upgrading our Intercom and Access Control systems, a major investment not only in terms of funds but also resources as accessing all units over a 4 week period was never going to be an easy task.

Under Chris’s leadership his installation team of Moe and Chris 2.0 did a stellar job assisting in wrangling access to all the apartments despite the language barriers due to the large number of non English speaking residents in our complex; including juggling the changing access needs that tenants imposed.

The systems were installed professionally, any issues were promptly sorted out and the project ran 100% to budget and timelines. We had zero complaints from owners and residents about the workmanship or workers on site which was very pleasing.

Overall as chairman of the OC I was very pleased with the outcome and would highly recommend Chris and his team to other apartment complexes for the installation and maintenance of intercom, access control and CCTV systems.

A single word of caution, and this is not directed to Chris or his team as it’s completely outside of their control or remit, these types of upgrades do require a significant time investment by the Owners Corporation, be mindful of this when budgeting and allow for additional schedule B costs from your strata manager.

Frequently Asked Questions - Retail Security Systems

Small single-front stores typically start from $3,200 installed. Standard boutique or fashion stores with cameras, alarm, EAS gates, and duress sit between $7,500 and $14,000. Larger stores with retail analytics, POS integration, and multi-site management platforms range from $15,000 to $32,000+. Every quote is fixed and itemised after a free site walkthrough with no lock-in contracts and no hidden call-out fees.

Yes, significantly. Independent retail industry studies show properly deployed EAS systems reduce shoplifting attempts substantially in high-shrink categories. The combination of visible pedestal deterrence at the exit, audible alarm on unpaid stock, and a defensible reason for staff to intervene gives retailers a measurable loss prevention layer.

Yes. POS exception review is one of the most effective loss prevention tools we install. When a refund, void, discount, no-sale, or manual price override is triggered, the transaction is timestamped and matched to the nearest camera. You can review the exact video for that transaction in seconds instead of scrubbing hours of footage. Most modern retail POS systems integrate with our exception review platform out of the box.

No. Under the NSW Surveillance Devices Act 2007 and Workplace Surveillance Act 2005, cameras are strictly prohibited inside fitting rooms, change rooms, and bathrooms. Cameras positioned OUTSIDE fitting rooms (facing entry and exit points) are legal and useful for tracking suspected concealment. Every retail install we complete positions fitting room cameras compliantly and lawfully.

In most cases, yes. Shopping centre tenants typically need centre management approval for external-facing cameras, alarm activations that trigger centre security response, and any hardware mounted on common walls or storefront glass. We handle the centre coordination and paperwork as part of the standard install, so you don’t need to negotiate directly with centre management.

Retail systems have to work while the premises is publicly accessible during trading hours. That means camera positioning for evidence during customer interactions (POS coverage, high-value zone monitoring, EAS gates), duress buttons for staff safety during aggression, alarm zoning that separates trading hours from after-hours, and NSW workplace surveillance compliance for customer-facing cameras.

Small single-front retail systems install in 1 to 2 days. Standard stores with EAS gates and 24/7 monitoring setup take 3 to 4 days. Larger multi-site rollouts with retail analytics take 1 to 2 weeks per site. We schedule work overnight or on weekends wherever possible to avoid trading disruption.

Yes, in almost every case. We schedule cabling, camera mounting, alarm sensor installation, and EAS gate setup for after trading hours, overnight, or weekends. The only work that typically needs to happen during trading is final system commissioning and staff training, which we time around your quieter periods (usually mid-week mornings).
